The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor achieved a key construction breakthrough in Maharashtra with the successful launch of a 1,405-tonne steel bridge over the Nashik Highway (NH-3) in Bhiwandi.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has reached another construction milestone in Maharashtra. A 100-metre-long steel bridge weighing 1,405 metric tonnes has been launched over NH-3, aka the Nashik Highway. The bridge has been launched at Dive-Anjur village in Bhiwandi, Thane district.
The bridge was installed during scheduled night-time traffic blocks to reduce disruption for highway users. It is the first steel bridge of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor to be launched in Maharashtra. Of the 28 steel bridges planned for the corridor, 16 have now been completed.
From what’s known, the bridge was assembled on temporary trestles about 17.5 metres above ground level. The installation used 22 skid arrangements and 54,076 Tor-Shear Type High Strength Bolts. Two hollow jacks, each with a capacity of 150 tonnes along with pre-tensioned Macalloy bars, formed part of the launching system.
After assembly, an automated launching mechanism pulled the structure into its final position over NH-3. The operation was carried out during night traffic blocks. This helped limit disruption on the busy highway while the massive structure was positioned above it.
The bridge has been designed for the demands of a high-speed rail system. Key specifications include:
The structure has a C5 protective painting system for enhanced corrosion and environmental protection. It also uses elastomeric bearings, which help accommodate movement and control vibration.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor will largely run on viaducts. However, some sections require much longer spans to cross existing infrastructure. Steel structures are being used at locations involving highways, expressways, railway lines, rivers and other crossings where longer uninterrupted spans are required. NHSRCL says the corridor has 28 steel bridges with individual spans ranging from 60 metres to 130 metres. The 28-bridge programme was planned specifically for crossings over railway lines, rivers, highways, roads and other structures.
The first section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is scheduled to open in August 2027. On the other hand, the full-line completion of the entire 508 km corridor is projected between 2028 and 2029.
The latest construction activity has a direct geographical connection with Bhiwandi in Thane district, where the new steel bridge has been installed at Dive-Anjur.
The key point is that high-speed rail infrastructure is being built alongside existing road and transport infrastructure in the region. The latest bridge itself is an infrastructure component of the larger rail corridor which once completed will likely positively impact property prices in Bhiwandi and nearby regions from where the bullet train will pass.
The launch of the 1,405 tonne steel bridge at Dive-Anjur marks a significant construction milestone for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project in Maharashtra. With 16 of the planned 28 steel bridges now completed, the project is steadily progressing across complex highway, railway and river crossings. As construction advances towards the targeted 2027 opening of the first section and the projected completion of the full corridor by 2029.
